Two exhibitions. Two cities. One mysterious figure. Find him twice.

Something unusual is happening in Northeast Ohio.

On Thursday, September 17, The Art Angel can be found hiding in plain sight in a photograph titled A New Look in Cleveland.

One night later, on Friday, September 18, he appears again—nearly an hour away in Barberton.

Your challenge is simple:

Find The Art Angel at both exhibitions, take a photograph at each stop, and enter for a chance to win your very own Art Angel T-shirt.

First stop: Cleveland
At SAMA at 78th Street Studios, look for a photograph by artist David F. Heatwole featuring five people sitting beneath hair dryers in a salon.
There's something a little unusual about them.
They're wearing gas masks.

And they're all wearing the same T-shirt.
Look closely.

On each shirt is a yellow pedestrian-style sign featuring a mysterious winged walking figure.
That's The Art Angel.

STOP 1 — SAMA at 78th Street Studios

Then Something Happens…
In the Cleveland photograph, The Art Angel exists as an image worn by five people sitting perfectly still.

But somehow…he gets out.

The next evening, The Art Angel can be found again—this time inside an enormous, colorful landscape at White Rabbit Galleries in Barberton.
And now he's walking.

Second Stop: Barberton

Look for David F. Heatwole's large panoramic painting: This Artist's Dream: The Path Taken
The Art Angel is no longer confined to a T-shirt or sign.

He has entered the landscape.
He walks along a path through an environment of shifting planes, color, symbols, memories and possibilities while a white dove moves ahead of him.

Where is he going?

That's part of the story.

STOP 2 — White Rabbit Galleries

THE CHALLENGE
Think of this as a two-stop Northeast Ohio art adventure.

To complete the Follow the Art Angel Challenge:
Visit the opening reception for Strange, inherently! at SAMA on Thursday, September 17.

Find David F. Heatwole's gas-mask salon photograph.

Have someone photograph you with the artwork—or take a selfie showing you and the artwork.

Visit the opening of Chroma: Vol 3 at White Rabbit Galleries on Friday, September 18.

Find This Artist's Dream: The Path Taken.

Take your second photograph with the painting.
Submit both photographs to officially complete the challenge.

Complete the journey and you could win an Art Angel shirt.

One participant who successfully documents both stops will receive their very own Art Angel T-shirt, featuring the same figure that connects the photograph and painting.

Suggested Entry Deadline
I recommend allowing people a little time after the second opening to submit their photographs:
Entries must be received by Saturday, September 19, 2026 at 9AM Eastern Time.

The winner will be announced on Tuesday on the Facebook page This Artists Dream.

HOW TO ENTER

Option A — Social Media

Option B — Direct Submission
For people who don't use social media, email your two photographs

WHAT SHOULD YOUR PHOTOS SHOW?

You don't have to reproduce the artwork perfectly.
We just need to be able to tell that you were there.
Your first photograph should show you with the exhibited photograph A New Look at SAMA.

Your second photograph should show you with This Artist's Dream: The Path Taken at White Rabbit Galleries.

Be creative.

Point at The Art Angel.

Imitate his walk.

Follow the dove.

Bring a friend.

The challenge is intended to make experiencing art a little more adventurous.

WHY THE ART ANGEL?

The Art Angel is a recurring figure in David F. Heatwole's work—a traveler through art, ideas and experience.

In one artwork, people wear his image.
In another, he steps into the landscape himself.
For these two exhibitions, separated by nearly an hour and opening on consecutive evenings, something unexpected happened:
The same figure connected two completely different works of art.

So instead of simply inviting people to two exhibitions, we're inviting you to follow him.

Cleveland → Barberton

Two exhibitions.
One figure.  One journey.

CAN YOU FIND HIM TWICE?

Thursday night, start in Cleveland.
Friday night, follow him to Barberton.

Take the pictures. Complete the journey.
And you just might go home with your own Art Angel.

  No purchase necessary. Participation in the Follow the Art Angel Challenge is free.
• Entrants must submit two qualifying photographs: one taken with David F. Heatwole's exhibited photograph at SAMA at 78th Street Studios and one taken with This Artist's Dream: The Path Taken at White Rabbit Galleries.

One eligible entry will be selected to receive one Art Angel T-shirt. Shirt size is subject to availability. Only one entry per person.

Participation in the challenge does not require posting photographs publicly. Entrants may use the private submission method described above.

Photographs should be taken without interfering with gallery operations, other visitors or artwork.
